Japanese actor Yo Oizumi has been confirmed to star in NTV's new drama series, "Oretachi no Hakone Ekiden." Adapted from Jun Ikeido's novel of the same name, the drama undergoes a significant shift in its narrative perspective. Instead of focusing on university track and field clubs as in the original work, the focus is now placed on the television crew behind the scenes of the live events, presenting a passionate story that unfolds beyond the track.
Set against the backdrop of the Hakone Ekiden, Japan's most iconic student relay race, the work depicts the various unexpected situations and pressures faced by the television crew during a two-day, over 14-hour live broadcast. Despite technical glitches, unpredictable events, and the dual limits of time and physical exertion, the production team persevered to present the event to the audience in its entirety and with authenticity.
At the same time, the plot doesn't neglect the tension of the competition itself. Athletes and coaches, facing adversity, constantly adjust their strategies and push their limits, pouring all their faith and effort into the Hakone Ekiden, a stage symbolizing honor and legacy. The student athletes' struggles and the dedication of the television crew behind the scenes intertwine, creating a resonance between competition and professionalism in the story.
Yo Oizumi plays Ryo Tokushige, the key producer at Dainippon Television responsible for the Hakone Ekiden live broadcast. This character bears the heavy responsibility of overseeing the entire operation, requiring him to make calm judgments while enduring immense psychological pressure during the high-intensity, long hours of live broadcasting. Through this character, the work attempts to showcase the rarely-seen professional dedication and teamwork behind sporting events.
"Our Hakone Ekiden" is scheduled to air in October 2026. Through the Hakone Ekiden, an important event considered a Japanese New Year tradition, the drama combines the spirit of sports with the real challenges of being on the front lines of the media, presenting a group portrait about perseverance, responsibility, and passion.
